After positing that democracy has never dominated world and national history, despite its reputation, the author develops a counterpoint between the Centenial of the Independence and today, less than five years from the second centenial, to conclude we continue having two Chiles: one happy and self-sufficient, enjoying the riches won by the nitrate on the past, and by the good price of copper and high macroeconomic indicators today, being in both cases the gap between these two Chiles huge. They would also share a smear of politics, a mix of politics and business, very similar electoral systems which do not give account of popular sovereignty, and critics who despite being silenced by the media, manage to strip the misery and exploitation of the lower classes in Chile.
