Quality of Democracy and Local Government in Mexico

Abstract

In this paper, using the Mexican case, we show an analysis of the issue of quality of democracy and local governments. We used data from a national survey and information in a statewide database to show, through two dimensions (rule of law, electoral dimension), that the explanatory power of those concepts helps to understand the contexts and situation of Mexican local governments. The results show that it is important to know more about Mexican subnational democracy because the indicators show, for one of the Mexican states, that it is an unconsolidated democracy.
