Energy transition in Latin America and the Caribbean: Inter and transdisciplinary dialogues in times of pandemic by Covid-19

Abstract

This paper discusses the challenges, trends, and ruptures that the energy sector in Latin

America and the Caribbean (LAC) experience. First, it outlines the current global and regional scenario based on three elements: Anthropocene, energy transition, and global sustainability plan. It is interspersed with the critical juncture generated by the Covid-19 pandemic emerging in 2020. Then, under a descriptive narrative, nine points feature the energy transition process from the beginning of the 21st century, which could outline viable futures in LAC. Finally, it is concluded that LAC plays a significant role in the transition to global sustainability. However, within the changes experienced within the region, there are substantial differences in terms of technological, social, and environmental factors. Furthermore, in the post-Covid-19 scenario, differences between countries, sub-regions, and social groups could continue to be experienced.
