Abstract

This article describes the evolution of the peace movement from its campaigns during the 1960s and 1980s to the present day. The main historiographic trends have considered the peace movement to be exhausted after the Cold War. On the contrary, this work’s thesis asserts that the peace movement is now stronger than ever, after an evolutionary process to adapt to the new challenges and demands of contemporary world. Accordingly, the peace movement now focuses on consolidating the increasing social conscience towards peace that has characterized the last 50 years –as the silent revolution theory asserts-; on humanitarian issues; on volunteer programmes; on nonviolent civil diplomacy; and finally on new ONG’s organization models, generally based on the so called mesomobilization.
