The construction of masculinity in chilean pentecostalism

Abstract

Chilean pentecostalism constructs different representantions of the hypersexed and violent masculinity. The male world is divided into “mundane men” and “pentecostal men”. In this way, a redemption of traditional masculinity arises, with clear borders that allow the domestication and the femenization of man.  In a more updated perspective, in pentecostalism to be a man is represented through two metaphors: “the gold seekers” and “lion heart”, alluding to a breaking-off with the conformity of previous masculinity, in regards to the success to which current evangelical men are impelled, conceiving this men like faith-hidalgos fighting for the theodicy of happiness.
