The purpose of this paper is to present the notion of Social Imaginary of Cornelius Castoriadis and the relevance of its use for the study of social movements. For this, we will review the major theoretical perspectives that have addressed this social phenomenon, some key concepts in the thought of Castoriadis and a proposal for an empirical approach to social movements with that theoretical framework.
